Title: Active Cyber-Thermal Management of Data Centers for Energy Efficiency

Abstract:

The IT industry is the one of the fastest growing sectors of the U.S. economy in terms of its energy consumption. According to a 2007 EPA report, U.S. data centers alone consumed 61 billion kWh in 2006 enough energy to power 5.8 million average households. Even under conservative estimates, IT energy consumption is projected to double by 2011. Reducing data center energy consumption is a pressing issue for the entire IT industry now and into the future. In this talk I will argue that dense and real-time environmental monitoring systems are needed to improve the energy efficiency of IT facilities and describe RACNet, a sensor network for monitoring a data center s environmental conditions. RACNet overcomes the network s large scale and density and the data center s harsh RF environment to achieve data yields of 99% or higher over a wide range of network sizes and sampling frequencies. In the second part of the talk I will describe how data collected by RACnet can be used to predict temperature distributions and trends in data centers. Such accurate predictions inform scheduling algorithms that place workload in ways to improve energy efficiency by reducing the duty cycle of the data center s air conditioning system and thus its energy consumption.
